Be selfish like it’s your birthday!
Written by Rachel BermanY
ou’ve been spending the past month getting gifts for other people. Now it’s time to treat yourself. In honor of our first anniversary and special birthday week, I thought I’d share some great gifts that will help you work towards a healthier lifestyle all year long.
Harry and David’s Fruit of the Month Club, HarryandDavid.com
When I was younger, I remember one of my parents’ friends would get them a Fruit of the Month Club subscription for the holidays. Each month, Harry & David will deliver a case of fruit at the peak of its ripeness to your doorstep, which will give you zero excuse not to include it in your daily meal plan! My parents barely had a chance to touch their gift since I would devour the case within the week, especially the delicious pears. The plans are on sale now, so sign up while you can get the discounted rate! If you don’t want to commit to a year, you can start with one, three, or six months of this gourmet fresh fruit.
Community Supported Agriculture, LocalHarvest.org
Want to get more veggies into your diet? Community Supported Agriculture lets you buy produce directly from a local farmer. You can get a membership to receive a box a week of vegetables and other farm products like dairy, eggs, and meats, which are all super fresh. The best part? It’s usually a surprise what you’re getting each week. This exposes you to different kinds of foods, and therefore varied nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. You can feel good about supporting local farmers, and feel good about eating unprocessed foods that don’t need to travel far and are less likely to contain preservatives. And it’ll get you out of your what’s-for-dinner rut! Check out localharvest.org/csa to find a program near you.
Nutrition at Your Fingertips, NutritionAtYourFingertips.com
Back in November, before the holidays (when you were likely not focused on eating healthfully), renowned nutrition expert Elisa Zied, MS, RD came out with what I call a nutrition bible. This is no diet book, people. It’s a place where you’ll find credible information and get tons of real-world tips. From how food is digested to how it can help prevent disease, you can refer to it over and over again for advice — kind of like an encyclopedia minus the boring. And if you e-mail us and tell us why you’d like to own it, Elisa will sign a copy for one lucky winner and send it to you personally! (Reply to contests@Skinnyandthecity.com by January 19th).
Core Fusion DVD, iAmplify.com
One of the first articles I ever wrote for Skinny was on Core Fusion, a workout regimen at Exhale Spa in select cities nationwide. It’s a mix of Pilates and isolated muscle strength training exercises that manages to be both effective and surprisingly calming. Now, you can do it cheaper at home, thanks to the Core Fusion DVD. Buy one at the store (you can get Body Sculpt, Abs & Arms, Pilates or others). Or, go to my new favorite site iAmplify.com and download to your computer for $15. Treat yourself to a new work out this year!
Happy birthday to us — and you!
