Break your pattern!
Written by Maureen Dempsey
Ikat is in. The earthy pattern — originally created by weaving tie-dyed yarn — was reimagined this spring by a slew of high-end designers including Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Milly, and Juicy Couture. Usually printed on cotton (which holds the trippy, hazy weave best), the pattern makes the perfect easy-breezy summer trend: It can be dressed up for night or down for day. Think of ikat (pronounced “ee-cot”) as tie-dye’s more mature, older sister. Here, our favorite finds:
For brunching: Charlotte Russe Ikat Smocked Tube Dress, $26.99, charlotterusse.com
Be doubly fashionable: This knee-length summer staple easily doubles as a swimsuit cover-up.
For walking: Ann Taylor Loft Diamond Ikat Scarf, $29.50, anntaylorloft.com
You know how we feel about the wonder that is the warm-weather scarf. Stylize any ensemble in a snap with this piece!
For shopping: BDG Printed Linen Skirt, $48, urbanoutfitters.com
We love the pop of color that plays nicely with the earth tones. Add a solid-colored slim tank and gladiator sandals, and your outfit’s complete!
For flirting: Charlotte Russe Ikat Satin Platforms, $29.99, charlotterusse.com
Super-glam touches (the bow, platform, sling back, 5-inch heel) balance the camouflage colors and hard-edged pattern.
For sunbathing: Trina Turk Ikat Cutout Swimsuit, $127, neimanmarcus.com
A one-piece that’s just as sultry as two (and more forgiving!), this halter suit’s plunging neckline gives it an old school glamour feel with a modern edge. The vibrant purple, orange, and yellow sweeten the deal.
Try something new!
