Enriched and famous
Written by Rachel Berman
Now that the low-carb phase is (finally!) ending, new products are popping up. These days, we know not all carbs are the same, so some of the newbies have added fiber; others are whole grain. There’s been a big move to whole wheat pasta, for instance — it has more nutrients and fiber than white pasta, and will keep you fuller longer. Unfortunately, some people don’t like the taste.
If you’re one of these haters, there’s hope! Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta is the first white flour pasta on the marketplace to be enriched with fiber and calcium. One serving has the same amount of calcium as a glass of milk. As for the fiber, it comes from resistant starch, which many studies have found acts the same way as natural fiber, helping control blood glucose levels and reducing cholesterol. Each 2-ounce serving of Smart Taste has 6 grams of fiber, which is about 25% of your daily need. Best of all, it gives you that white pasta taste. You can easily fool your family — and yourself! — into thinking it’s regular pasta. Try using the spaghetti, elbows, penne, or rotini in your favorite recipe. I’m planning on using it to make spaghetti Bolognese this weekend for my boyfriend who refuses to eat whole wheat pasta. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him — in fact, it’ll help him!
