Have your chocolate — and eat it, too
Written by Barbie Broschart
Confession: I’m obsessed with ice cream. It’s my “trigger” food – which means that one scoop turns into many and before I know it, half the container is gone! Not a good habit for a dietitian. So, since I like to lead by example, whenever my sweet tooth starts acting up, I grab a Chocolite protein bar. I first became familiar with these bars when working in Tanya’s Manhattan office, but apparently the company has been around since 2006 creating bars that taste like candy and — get this — ICE CREAM! They even come in my all-time favorite flavors — Cookies ‘n Cream and Smores! Even better, all the bars contain anywhere from 95 to 115 calories, 3.5 to 6 grams of fat, 10 grams of fiber and 9 grams of protein. For me, these protein bars are the perfect after-dinner treat — and keep me from diving into my freezer headfirst. And diabetics, listen up! Many of my diabetes patients love these bars too because they have a positive effect on blood sugars due to their high fiber, high protein and low-sugar content. They won’t cause blood sugar spikes and don’t give you the typical feelings of fatigue like many other sweets do a few hours after eating. And if that wasn’t sweet enough — the other day one of my patients introduced me to Chocolite’s newest invention: Cookies ‘n Cream chocolates! With only 40 calories, 6 grams of carbohydrate, 0 grams sugar and 5 grams of fiber in one piece she was psyched that she found a treat that satisfied her and kept her blood sugars within target range. A typical Cookies ‘n Cream candy bar can cost 220 calories, 27 grams of carbohydrate, 19 grams sugar and 0 grams fiber. With these Chocolite candies you save 130 calories, 15 grams carbohydrate and 17 grams sugar, plus you’ll get an additional 10 grams of fiber. As a dietitian I am always learning about new products from my patients. I can’t wait to pick up a bag!

I am a chocoholic, but I never keep any chocolate at home, so whenever I have chocolate cravings that I just can't overcome, I go out and buy dark chocolate and eat several pieces. It doesn't make me any bad, and I do not feel like I am pushing myself to quit chocolate forever)

when I crave chocolate or ice cream I have it! In moderation, but I indulge myself and give in to the desire full on. I sit, relax, eat slowly savoring each taste, inhaling the aroma and tuning out the world. Then I will drink extra water and go a bit longer on the treadmill or eliptical, walk the dogs an extra half hour, and eliminate an extra carb that day, but I always allow the desire for chocolate or ice cream! I have also lost 76 pounds in one year following a sensible eating plan.
