Need a dietitian? Skinny can help
Written by Barbie Broschart
In honor of National Registered Dietitian Day (bet you didn’t know that was a holiday!), I would like to take a second to thank all my fellow RDs (and soon to be) out there for all of their hard work and dedication to improving the lives of their communities and patients! The field of nutrition has become such a vast and growing industry that it’s no wonder we dedicate the entire month of March for its recognition. Dietitians don’t just counsel people on how to lose weight – we’re omnipresent in all sorts of disciplines and work environments. You can find us in hospitals counseling patients who recently had heart attacks, in a doctor's office showing patients with celiac disease how to make over their diets so they get the right nutrients, or on the football field advising athletes on how to get adequate calories and protein for optimal performance. You can find us in private practice, research, advertising, education, and menu and product development. We can help people train at their optimum performance level for races or athletic events, and we can even help people gain weight (think boxers who need to be at a certain weight class, or people struggling with eating disorders).Do you ever feel like you are looking for a dietitian but just aren’t sure how to find one? If you haven’t received a recommendation from someone it can sometimes be a bit overwhelming to find an RD that is right for you and your needs. That’s why, here at SkinnyintheCity we have added a new feature – theskinnyondietitians.com. It’s an interactive, innovative dietitian directory. While still in the early stages, the website features RDs from all over the United States who have provided us with their profiles, information about their training (which is pretty extensive), contact information and areas of specialty with a fresh twist. If they choose, RDs are able to feature articles, links, or videos about themselves and their practice so you can really see and hear your dietitian of choice’s voice.
If you are looking for an RD, just log onto www.theskinnyondietitians.com, enter your zip code and select a specialization from a concise drop-down menu. If you are an RD and are interested in getting your info on the site, click on the RD sign up tab on the website or here.
Happy RD Day!

I was feeling tired all the time and it was starting to affect my overall mood and disposition. My Dr recommended I work with a dietitian to help balance my eating. After a few weeks I noticed a difference and five years later I have stuck to the habits with the help of my dietitian. I am now happy full of energy and loving my body and meal time more than ever.

I recently had a baby and was struggling with shedding the last 10 pregnancy pounds. My husband suggested I see a dietitian because he could see it was really getting to me.
I was nervous at first, I thought of having to tell this stranger about everything I was eating and have eaten...SCARY! To my surprise Ann (my dietitian) was warm and understanding, she had struggled with her weight in the past too so she could relate. She gave me the tools to change some not so great habits that I had, some of which I didn't even realize was affecting my weight.
I lost those last 10 lbs plus another 6 lbs that I wasn't even planning on losing. My husband is thrilled with my appearance and he has taken to the healthy foods I have been cooking. I am now a good roll model for Alexa my now 6 month old baby girl.

My weight has always been a problem for me-I love shopping and I used to only buy shoes and bags-because no matter how much weight I gained I could still accessorize my all-black outfits with them. After going to a dietitian where i live in nj i was able to shed all my weight (and more!) and now i am able to buy clothes and feel great in them!

In my teens I suffered with acne, I went to different derms, tried different pills, lotions and masks...and nothing. My cousin's friend is a Registered Dietitian and she told me I should speak to her. Sure enough as soon as I added some foods into my diet my skin cleared up. Its amazing that the foods we eat affect how we look. I am 100% committed to eating food that serve a purpose other than taste. I feel happier and healthier too.

Laura I relate to you fully, I just had a baby boy and I am going through the same thing. It feels great to bounce back and regain control, I really don't think I could have done it without the support of my RD, (go Samantha you really are the best!!!). I now think of my RD Samantha as my food and life therapist. Different outlook towards life and now a good role model for my son.

I paid a fortune to see a dietitian after being diagnosed with allergies to wheat, barley, shellfish, milk, and pecans. I took a food log for the previous 3 weeks with me so she could help me figure out how to get all the nutrients I need. So did not happen! She basically said it sucks to be me, and handed me a list of things I CAN'T eat. I would love to see someone who is knowledgeable and prepared to help me. It's really hard to eat a truly healthy diet with so many restrictions and stay a healthy weight. I will never use a hospital based RD again.

Payton, that sounds like you had an awful experience, I am so sorry to hear that. I have seen a few different dietitians (bc i move around a lot) it's rare to hear a dietitian that isn't sympathetic, I recommend you give it another try. I actually used the new skinny dietitian directory and found someone in my neighborhood. I am meeting with them next week. I need to lose a few lbs for spring/summer. I will let you know how it goes.
